A Sweet Partnership

On the coast of Maine, two beloved local products were blended together to create a delightful treat. This collaboration showcases the magic that happens when local businesses support one another.

Allen's Wild Blueberries and Stone Fox Farm Creamery

Stone Fox Farm Creamery scoops up Wild Blueberry Ice cream during the summer season.

At Allen's Wild Blueberries, our story began in 1912 as a humble canning operation for home-grown wild blueberries. Fast forward to 1976, we transformed into a freezing (IQF) processor, serving our family and independent wild blueberry farmers. Now, in our fifth generation, we maintain and harvest blueberries on 1,200 acres across mid-coast and Downeast Maine.

Today, we grow, harvest, and process approximately 1.5 million pounds of wild Maine blueberries annually. Our packaging includes 10-pound boxes for retail and 30-pound cartons of IQF wild blueberries for wholesale distribution. Although we might be the smallest grower and processor, we pride ourselves on delivering the highest quality (USDA Grade A) frozen wild blueberries to the market.

Our journey took an exciting turn when Stone Fox Farm Creamery reached out to us. Passionate about supporting local businesses, they use Maine-grown ingredients whenever possible. Our blueberries were a perfect fit for their homemade, super premium ice cream.

Stone Fox Farm Creamery produces and sells ice cream from their shop in Searsport, Maine. Their close-knit team is dedicated to quality. They use milk and cream from Maine farms, real sugar, and natural flavorings and extracts. Their Carpigiani batch freezer creates an incredibly smooth and creamy product with minimal air incorporated, resulting in a superior ice cream experience. They offer approximately 25 flavors, some of which are seasonal.

Our collaboration has been a natural fit, blending two beloved products into one irresistible treat. The result? A blueberry ice cream that celebrates the best of what Maine has to offer. Both businesses benefit from this partnership, as do our customers who adore the combination.

Wild Blueberries vs. Cultivated Blueberries

Discover the powerhouse of flavor and nutrition in wild blueberries! Twice the antioxidants, 72% more fiber, and packed with natural goodness, wild blueberries are nature's superfood. Learn why they're a game-changer for your health and culinary adventures.

Unveiling Nature's Superfood

When it comes to blueberries, most people are familiar with the cultivated varieties commonly found in grocery stores and markets. However, there's a lesser-known counterpart that packs a powerful punch in both flavor and nutrition: wild blueberries. Let's delve into the differences that make wild blueberries nature's superfood.

Genetic Diversity and Intense Flavor

One of the standout features of wild blueberries is their genetic diversity. A handful of wild blueberries can contain several different varieties, contributing to an intense flavor profile that is unmistakable. This natural diversity adds depth and complexity to dishes and snacks alike.

Nutritional Superiority

Wild blueberries boast impressive nutritional credentials. They contain twice the antioxidants of cultivated blueberries, making them potent combatants against oxidative stress. These antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins, are natural plant compounds that help protect against inflammation and chronic diseases.

Fiber and Sugar Content

For those mindful of their diet, wild blueberries offer significant benefits. They contain 72% more fiber and 32% less sugar per serving compared to their cultivated counterparts. This lower sugar content makes them a favorable option for those seeking to manage their sugar intake while still enjoying a naturally sweet treat.

More Berries, More Value

In every pound of wild blueberries, you get 25% more servings compared to cultivated blueberries. Their smaller size also means better distribution of whole fruit in baking, cooking, and various product applications. This results in more berries per bite, enhancing visual appeal, taste, and overall value for consumers.

Culinary and Health Benefits

Beyond their culinary versatility, wild blueberries are celebrated for their health benefits. They are rich in bioactive nutrients and boast a high antioxidant capacity, contributing to overall well-being and vitality. Whether enjoyed fresh, frozen, or incorporated into recipes, wild blueberries offer a delicious way to boost nutrition.

Environmental and Cultural Significance

Wild blueberries also carry environmental and cultural significance. They grow naturally in specific regions, contributing to local ecosystems and agricultural diversity. Cultivating wild blueberries often involves sustainable practices that respect natural habitats and support biodiversity.

Conclusion

In summary, wild blueberries stand out not only for their intense flavor and nutritional superiority but also for their environmental sustainability and cultural value. Whether you're baking, blending into smoothies, or simply snacking, choosing wild blueberries ensures you're enjoying a true superfood that nature has perfected over time.

Next time you're in the produce aisle or planning your next culinary adventure, consider the benefits of incorporating wild blueberries into your diet. Your taste buds and your health will thank you for choosing this natural powerhouse of flavor and nutrition.
